Green tea extract and skin health

Green tea extract and skin health - BonWellness | US

Green tea extract turns up in a great many beauty and wellness products. Here is what it is and why formulators reach for it.

What is green tea extract?

Green tea extract comes from the leaves of the Camellia sinensis plant. Unlike black tea, green tea undergoes minimal processing, which preserves its polyphenols, particularly the catechins, of which epigallocatechin gallate, or EGCG, is the best known.

Why it is used in skin care

Antioxidant content. Catechins are antioxidants, compounds associated with helping neutralise free radicals. Free radical activity is one of the factors linked with visible signs of ageing.

A long history of use. Green tea has been consumed and applied topically across East Asia for well over a thousand years, and it remains one of the most studied plant extracts in the category.

It works alongside a routine, not instead of one. Green tea extract is not a substitute for sunscreen. Daily broad spectrum SPF remains the single most effective step for protecting skin from UV exposure.

Ways to use it

  • Topical products. Serums, creams and lotions that list green tea extract high in the ingredient list.
  • Diet. Drinking green tea contributes to hydration and antioxidant intake.
  • Patches. A wearable format for people who prefer not to add another step to a routine.

Things to know

Green tea extract is generally well tolerated. Very high intake in supplement form has been associated with digestive upset and, rarely, liver problems. If you have sensitive skin, patch test any new topical product. Speak to a healthcare professional before starting a new supplement, particularly if you are pregnant, breastfeeding or taking other medication.
