Building a bedtime that works

Building a bedtime that works - BonWellness | US

Struggling to sleep well? You are not alone. A racing mind at 2am, or waking up still tired, derails the whole day. A few adjustments to your routine tend to do more than most people expect.

1. Keep a consistent sleep schedule

Your body runs on a roughly 24 hour internal clock that responds well to routine. Go to bed and get up at the same time each day, weekends included. Morning daylight reinforces the wake signal and helps you feel alert during the day.

2. Build a calming bedtime routine

Give your body clear cues that the day is ending. Dim the lights an hour out. Make a caffeine free herbal tea. Read a few pages. Stretch. The specifics matter less than doing the same things in the same order each night, until the routine itself starts making your eyelids heavy.

3. Set up a sleep friendly room

Cool, dark and quiet is the target. Blackout curtains or an eye mask for stray light. A white noise machine or earplugs if you live somewhere noisy or share a bed with a snorer. Most people sleep best somewhere around 15 to 19 degrees Celsius, or 60 to 67 Fahrenheit, because a cooler room helps your core temperature drop. Check that your mattress and pillows suit your sleep position.

4. Watch your evening intake

Caffeine is the usual culprit. A 3pm coffee can still be working on your nervous system at bedtime, so cut it off at least six hours before you plan to sleep, earlier if you are sensitive. Heavy or spicy dinners late in the evening can cause discomfort that interrupts sleep. Alcohol may make you drowsy at first but it fragments sleep cycles. Stay hydrated through the evening, just not in the last hour.

5. Move, but time it right

Regular exercise helps sleep and helps stress. Timing matters: schedule hard sessions earlier in the day, or at least a few hours before bed, because high intensity training close to bedtime leaves you wired when you want the opposite. Save the evening for stretching or gentle movement.

6. Look at traditional botanicals

Valerian root and passion flower have been part of evening routines for centuries. Magnesium is another common choice, whether as a supplement or an Epsom salt bath. Lavender oil on a pillow suits people who respond to aromatherapy. Natural does not mean risk free, so talk to a healthcare professional if you take other medication or have any concerns.
