What is white noise, and does it help with sleep?
Getting a good night's sleep matters, and for a lot of people it is the hardest part of the day to get right. White noise comes up constantly as a remedy. Here is what it actually is and what it can reasonably be expected to do.
What is white noise?
White noise is a consistent sound that masks other noises in your environment by emitting all frequencies at roughly equal intensity. Think of a steady hum that covers street noise, a barking dog, or the sound of household appliances. Common sources include fans, air purifiers, and purpose-built white noise machines.
Why it helps some people
The main thing white noise does is blunt sudden sounds that would otherwise pull you out of sleep, from traffic to someone moving around the house. A consistent auditory backdrop leaves fewer sharp edges for your brain to react to. For light sleepers and people in noisy environments, that can matter a lot.
Some people also find the steady hum gives a busy mind something simple to settle on at bedtime.
It does not work for everyone
Plenty of people find white noise unnecessary or actively irritating. Personal preference and your sleep environment both play a part, and study results vary. If you are curious, try it for a week and see whether it changes anything.
Where it fits
White noise is one lever among several. A consistent schedule, a dark cool room, and what you eat and drink in the evening all matter more for most people. We have written up the full set of habits here.
